Methuselah Foundation - Extending Healthy Human Life

IN THE NEWS
Three Labs are Better than One

Recent news reports have announced the surprising and promising effects of rapamycin (August Newsletter), the first pharmaceutical known to extend healthy life in mice. Dr. Z. David Sharp's idea to test this drug on mice was simply a wish until he connected with ITP. ITP is the Interventions Testing Program of the National Institute on Aging (NIA). This Program took Dave's ideas from concept to reality with efficiency and credibility.

The Interventions Testing Program is only 5 years old but already it has proven to provide a practical solution. According to Huber Warner, the founder of the program, “It occurred to me that I saw lots of papers from grantees of the NIA about slowing down aging and expending lifespan but they were rarely backed up and given credibility through testing.” Huber realized that a focused program was needed so that more than one lab was confirming whether an intervention works. He proposed the idea to the NIA that led to the Intervention Testing Program.

ITP generally selects studies based on treatments that are easily obtainable, reasonably priced and delivered in the food of the mice. The research is conducted in three labs, chosen by ITP, to conduct the tests with mice: University of Michigan, Jackson Laboratories in Maine and University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. Three labs working simultaneously accelerate the testing process. Dave Sharp also notes, “The three labs have no intellectual stake in the results. This is scientifically significant and further validates the success.”

Mprize competitor Bruce Teter (see related article) is working with ITP now to test curcumin. Tests have been conducted with aspirin, green tea extract and other interventions. The results with rapamycin are the first major breakthrough from an ITP study, with strong results in rejuvenation and extended lifespan in both male and female mice.

“It seems a cruel joke that just when we've finally lived long enough to become wise, we begin the great decline into physical and mental deterioration that eventually leads to death.”
